I ART FRAZER IRVING

Doodles, scribbles and misc art stuff from Frazer Irving, International Comicbook Rockstar.
For her 23rd Birthday, what do you get the girl who has everything? Well, a large box to put it all in obviously. But more specifically, what do you get the girl who recieved her birthday present early, in the form of a lovely Intuous 4 wacom tablet so she could doodle and fix all those nice manga scans? Answer: A drawing of her as Yuko from xxxHolic of course! All sized and prepped to be a wallpaper for her iPad or some such device as well. I’m not *made* of money you know. The test of this is to see if she checks her feed before heading out all bewigged to play at Expo later. Happy birthday @unknownusername :) xxx

My latest offering for you all is the cover to Higher Earth issue 4, due out in August I believe. Unlike the previous covers, this one focusses solely upon Rex. I did have a brilliant idea for an amaaaaazing background which would have given 90% of you epileptic fits, but in the end I realised that this bleak washed-out post-apocalyptic yellow was far more effective, and it took a lot less time as well.

There are so many lovely images sitting on my computer that I would like to share with y’all, however most of them have yet to be previewed or even mentioned by the publishers that have commissioned them so I am unable to let u feast upon their chromadelic goodness for a while. This one, however, has just been previewed by DC Comics. It’s the variant cover to The Shade issue 9 (which I have also drawn the interiors for) and will be published shortly (as of this typing). I’m quite proud of it because of reasons. I hope some of you like it too (and then go buy the comic/legitimate digital download).

k0mi asked: thought you're going to Kapow! and now you dropped out of the guest list :-( is it true?! regards, milan

Was I on the guest list? I didn’t even know that show was on! So no, I won’t be going…probably too busy chasing deadlines around the castle. Those pages don’t draw themselves (though I sometimes wish they would) and thus I am attending few or no conventions this year. If they did advertise me at any point, have a word with the organisers and tell them they were very naughty to do that.

2000adonline:

Frazer Irving got into the Dark Judges single page gag strip back in the day.

OMFG, it’s like a flashback to days many many moons past where Art was made with ancient artifacts called “Brah-shiiz”, often (but not always) dipped in a viscous fluid black as the soul of Hades himself, which I think we called “oil” but I could be wrong there. If I recall correctly, oil was also flammable, yet this other stuff wasn’t (I encountered this on the many occasions when I flicked the ash from a cigarette into the jar instead of the ashtray, and I noted the lack of flammability). Still, good times. 2003, man.

Selling prints…

So, after that last post about selling art, I googled myself (first time in WEEKS, I assure you) to see what was actually out there. And Lo and Behold, I find this:

http://tinyurl.com/ckdk4qr

Just so’s you all know (and so that this post also becomes a public record of my involvement with these charlatans) I have nothing to do with it. Certainly noone from this site asked me (or Marvel comics for that matter AFAIK) and they totally haven’t sent me a cut of any proceeds.

Am I angry? Not really, I don’t own the copyright on those images (Marvel does), and it’s an incomplete selection anyway, most likely scanned from the A3 one-off prints I made on my inkjet printer a few years back for the dudes who bought the original line art off me (this is speculation, but the selection does match up quite nicely) so I can’t imagine the quality is all that. I do mind that they have my name on it, as if I have endorsed this ramchackle hodge-podge carnival-in-a-basement of an operation, but what can ye do? Not crying over it, not suing over it (that’s Marvel’s duty) so besides this post I’m not even going to bother about it.

But maybe I should resume my weekly practice of self-googlisation, just in case some other crap pops up, like dildos with Klarion printed all over, or Gutsville underwear, or Joker cakes etc.

lo-inevitable asked: Is there a place where I can buy some of your art?

Since 2007 all my work has been 100% digital, and any non-digital stuff rests either in the clammy hands of collectors on the internet or in the back of closets of those who got the free sketches. If google shows no results (or ebay for that matter) then there’s nuthin to be bought I’m afraid to say :(

kid-pee asked: have you ever considered selling one of those "the art of" books? basically a book of your best artwork? I am a huge fan of your artwork and it would be pretty awesome if I had a huge collection of your artwork in book form. I'd buy it!

Wow, I leave these things for ages before I reply don’t I? Regarding a book…well, I am planning a digital version of something like that, and it will be optimised for the glorious tablet screens now floating around, however the issues regarding getting permission from all my previous clients to use artwork that contains their characters are kinda putting me off pursuing it fully at the moment. It might be as easy as just asking them nicely, or it could entail paperwork and contracts and shit that makes my brane hurt. To make the paper version (which is what you were referring to) would cost bucks, and probably mean involving a proper publisher. This is unappealing to me, because I am a control freak. However, never say never! Glad to hear you have interest in such a product :)

This is the cover to Higher Earth issue 3, which was just unleashed for solicits today it appears. Sometimes the previews for my covers get chucked into the cyber-web without being colour corrected back from CYMK to RGB, and so they may look a little garish if one sees them on comics news sites. On tumblr however, I control the vertical, horizontal, and diagonal, as well as the colour profiles. One thing that ran thru my mind as I made this cover was how pretty much all the work I am doing now will be seen on those gorgeous GORGEOUS high definition tablet screens such as the new iPad, and how that affects what sort of detail I put into the art. This particular cover has some small figures, but it was important to ensure that when the digi-crowd zoom in on the art that there is something else waiting for them in the pixels, so I drew detail which wouldn’t normally show up in print with that in mind. And all for the same page rates! Us freelancers, we’re crazy.

So, as well as pages of The Shade for DC, I have been doodling a cover or two as of late for a series from Boom! comics called “Higher Earth”. Due to my being uninvolved with the interwebs lately I hadn’t noticed that the cover to issue 2 was already out there, so somewhat late to the party I am offering it up for the tumblr crowd to check out. It’s odd how I have become quite attached to these characters even tho I haven’t read any interiors yet and have only drawn 4 covers, but each time I draw them they become a little more real for me.
